According to oral tradition, Zulu - which means “Sky” - is the name of the ancestor who founded Zulu lineage circa 1670. Today, it is estimated that the Zulu population is of about 12 million, representing 22% of South Africa’s inhabitants. Conflicts within the tribe are settled via traditional stick fighting. The duel ends with the first wound, and it is customary for the winner to help the loser clean his sores. In rare cases when a man is killed, the winner of the fight is not taken to court as long as the rules were abided.
