Algunos tipos de medusa son bioluminiscentes, es decir, brillan. Tanto algunas medusas marinas como dulceacuícolas tienen esta capacidad. Las medusas usan su bioluminiscencia para advertir a sus depredadores de su toxicidad.
Como las luciérnagas y pocos animales más, las medusas disfrutan de una proteína lumínica en la parte trasera del cuerpo; unos la emplean para defenderse y otros para atacar. La medusa Pelagia Noctiluca es la más conocida por sus cualidades luminiscentes.
