The Sago palm

Hidden in the West Papua jungle, the Korowai are part of the 250 tribes who live on this vast island. Often, the Korowai travel through their territory looking for the tree that feeds them, the sago palm. The giant herb is precious: it is the Papua feeding backbone.
This collective ritual mobilizes almost all the clan, even its chief. The sago palm is cut down, and divided into several parts by the men, in order to collect the tree pulp. The flour making process is the women's task, in the middle of the jungle, they build a sago workshop near the river: with the big leaves they create canals, they add vegetal leaves which act as sieves. The sago pulp is dived in water and filtered. Then the liquid is decanted, once it is transformed into a paste, women of the tribe dry it to obtain the sago flour.
