With its 1,450 hectares, the Biguglia Pond Nature Reserve, in « Haute-Corse », is the largest wetland on the island. It protects more than 250 bird species. Since 1997, the Pink flamingo winters here in large colonies. The famous coloration of this wading bird’s plumage comes from its diet which contains carotenoid pigments, including the Artemia salina shrimp. Thanks to its unique beak which is equipped with combs, it filters the brackish salt in the water and captures crustaceans and algae into the suspended mud.
