The Mangareva kingfisher
In the Tuamotu archipelago, Niau is a special atoll for at least two reasons: it is completely enclosed and shelters a unique species of bird in the world: the mangareva kingfisher. Called Koteuteu by the population, this little bird is threatned of extinction. Its main enemies are rats and cats that climb along the trunks of coconut trees to eat eggs or chicks.
