More than 725 bird species can be found in Papua. The Explorers Team had the privilege to see the cassowary, a prominent bird in Papuan culture. Measuring up to 1m80 (5,9 ft) and 70 kilos (154 lbs), the cassowary is considered as the most dangerous bird to humans. It has powerful legs, with three finger, one of which has a claw as formidable as a dagger. It can not fly but run at speeds of up to 50 km/h (31 mph). It is sought by hunters for its flesh, its feathers that tribes use as ornaments, and its bones which are used to make daggers.
