Snakes in South Africa
8
0
Approximately 170 species and sub-species of snakes can be found in South Africa. Among them, only twenty are able to inflict a deadly bite, and on average only 11 deaths a year occur because of a bite. More than half of the species are completely inoffensive. Examples of deadly snakes are the green mamba (Dendroaspis viridis), the black mamba (Dendroaspis polylepis) and the Mozambique spitting cobra (Naja mossambica).
