Saison de ponte des tortues d’Hermann dans le Var

Unusual! 2 female Herman tortoises of wild origin, part of our conservatory breeding program, decided to dig and to lay their eggs at the same time!
Each year, Hermann tortoises lay their eggs between May and June. Females usually lay 3 or 4 eggs once a year in Var area (againt twice a year in Corsica). If there is a second egg-laying, it happens between 10 and 20 days after the first one.
Egg hatching is linked with the first rains of the end of summer, usually between september and october.
The young tortoises seem to live nearby the nesting sites during the first years of their life, in natural shelters such as brambles. Nesting sites are especially sensitive habitats.
