Smaller than its cousin, the giant manta ray, the reef manta ray can still reach a size of 18 feet (5,5 meters) and weigh 3000 pounds (1,4 tonnes). Despite this impressive size, it feeds only on plankton, a diverse collection of microscopic organisms. The reef manta ray’s “horns”, known as “cephalic lobes”, are in fact extensions of its two large pectoral fins. Positioned in a funnel-like shape, they help the ray while feeding.
