The early Maohi already produced this sacred oil, which they used as a healing product and in some religious ceremonies. Since 1992, Tahiti monoï has had a registered designation of origin, which certifies its authenticity: it is industrially produced in Tahiti, using Gardenia tahitensis - the renowned Tiaré Flower. It is harvested early in the morning before the flowers open so as to preserve all their olfactory properties, Tiaré Flowers are later mixed with Polynesian copra oil.
