Makatea is an island with a unique geological formation. It's an elevated atoll, whose immense cliffs rise up to 100 meters above the Pacific Ocean. During the first part of the twentieth century, the phosphate mines of Makatea were the first resource of French Polynesia, making the small quiet island a real industrial city. Today, it is completely abandoned. But in 1966, when the mine closed, Makatea became a great forgotten industrial wasteland of the world.
