In the Misool archipelago in Papua, astonishing paintings have been discovered on steep cliffs, only accessible by boat. These are symbolic representations of marine animals and negative hands, executed using the stencil technique. Exceptional and rare, a yoni, a female sexual sign is also drawn on the rock. It seems to indicate that these drawings were made by women. These cave paintings are similar to those discovered in Borneo. They visibly mark ceremonial places.
