Walruses of the Arctic
Every two years, walrus females give birth to a single young with which they have a very strong bond. The young walruses stay at their side for 3 to 5 years. When the ice pack melts on Foxe Basin, the females and their young use the drifting ice pieces to rest. Walrus cubs cannot swim very long because their fat layer is not yet thick enough to protect them from the icy waters of the Arctic.
