Two of the biggest pirogue racing competitions take place in the Society Archipelago: the Hawaiki Nui Va’a and the Tahiti Nui Va’a. Both can gather up to 100 pirogues of six places, occupied by five rowers and a helmsman who chooses the path to follow, according to the currents and the wind.
