The crucial role of the Baird tapir
6
0
Baird tapirs (Tapirus indicus) live in the jungle of Honduras and Central America. The food diet of these nocturnal and solitary animals is composed of leaves, buds, twigs, bark, aquatic plants, but also seeds. Thanks to their prehensile nose they constantly scent, for detecting a congener or a predator(such as jaguars). This big herbivore, close to the horse and rhino, plays a crucial part in the tropical forest dynamism and in the seed dissemination due to its excrements. Given their role and wide range habitat, tapirs are umbrella species: protecting their habitat also protects the habitat of many other species.
