The Corsican deer (Cervus elaphus corsicanus) is one of 16 subspecies of the red deer (Cervus elaphus). Native of Sardinia, it has been present in the wild since Neolithic times. It is thought to have been introduced in Corsica at the beginning of our era. It is characterized by its small size and short antlers which rarely exceed 30 inches (80 cm). The mating season can start in early summer, and usually ends around November. During the rut, fights between dominant males can be fatal.
