The Korowai tree house

The Korowai are hunter-gatherers. They live in clans of about 20 people, in the middle of the equatorial forest of West Papua. They build their houses at the tree-tops to protect themselves from mosquitos, snakes, bad spirits and enemies clans. These “rumah tinghi”, 100% made from plants, are built with materials collected in the immediate environment, without any other means than the hand of man. More than 15 different species are selected for their resistance, their flexibility and their lightness. Sometimes perched at more than 130 ft high (40 meters), this construction represents a real architectural prowess.
