Southernmost city of Corsica, Bonifacio was founded circa 830. Its excellent strategic position and its great value as a commercial harbour was the cause of a long rivalry between Pisa and Genoa. The two cities fought for the citadel between the 11th century and the end of the 12th century. Eventually, Genoa took over. The Strait of Bonifacio separates Corsica from Sardinia, some 9 miles (15 km) away. This inlet is well-known for its strong currents and its numerous rocks, making its crossing perilous.
