Scarlet macaw
During the 1000 years of their reign, the Maya worshipped the Ara, a bird symbol of the almighty sun god. The ruins of Copan are marked with their imprint. Endemic to South and Central America, the Scarlet Macaws live in colonies of several dozens of individuals. Like inseparables, they live as a couple, with the same partner throughout their lives. They are now protected because they are threatened in their natural habitat.
