The highest 'rumah tinghi' (treehouse) of the Korowai village reaches 141 feet (43 meters) high, as tall as Notre-Dame de Paris’ cathedral facade. It is home to the village chief, Sappuru, who lives there with his two wives. This choice of living high above the ground is mainly motivated by the Korowai’s fear of spirits and enemy tribes. It also has the advantage of protecting them from malaria-carrying mosquitos, which don’t fly this high up.
