The African elephant (Loxodonta africana) is the largest terrestrial mammal. The largest individual recorded reaches 13 feet at the shoulder and weighs 22 000 pounds. The elephant also features the biggest brain among all animals. Having evolved to support the heaviness of the trunk, tusks and jaws, the elephant’s skull comprises 25 percent of the animal’s total body weight.
