Corsican polyphonic singing
15
0
The Corsican society is based on an oral tradition and early writings only appeared during the 18th century. Therefore, the advent of the iconic polyphonic chants cannot be dated. These songs have been passed on from father to son for many generations. They can be profane or sacred, like here in San Martinu Patrimoniochurch. Corsican polyphonic songs are more often sung a cappella and focus on communicating emotions. They punctuate life on the island, celebrating births as well as mourning deaths. They reflect the culture, the Corsican way of life.
