The coconut crab is the largest terrestrial arthropod in the world. Its average size is about 40 centimeters (15 in). It is omnivorous, but its preference goes to coconuts, which it unhooks directly at the top of the tree and breaks the shell with its powerful claws. In Tuamotu, it is hunted for its flesh. To catch it, the Paumotu fix coconut halves as bait in the vegetation.
