Agats, capital of Asmat people

On the Southwest coast of West Papua along the Arafura Sea, a Papuan ethnic group of about 75,000 people lives in Agats, Asmat’s capital. In this territory of plains, mangroves, and jungles, the constant tides forced the inhabitants to build on stilts.
Agats is the crossing point from the Papua of the interior, and from its natural resources. In this city, Indonesians and Chinese traders mix with the Papua population, blending modernity and tradition.
