Famous for its 9,320sqmi (15,000km2) of lagoons listed as UNESCO heritage, New Caledonia also has several provincial parks and natural, botanical or zoological terrestrial reserves, such as the Rivière-Bleue or Grandes Fougères provincial parks and the Madeleine reserve. Their level of protection of the ecosystems varies according to their status.
