During the breeding season, from end of March to mid-May, the Common Crane (Grus grus), otherwise rather gregarious, becomes territorial. The pair nests in isolation in wetlands and wooded areas, or on an island for better protection from predators. The nest consists of a large platform of dry grass, built on the ground. The female lays 1 or 2 eggs which the parents incubate alternately for four weeks. Around the Lac du Der in the Champagne region, the cranes find an abundant diet of plant matter, but also insects, molluscs and small crustaceans.
