The young gulls are nicknamed grisards because of their plumage mixing brown, beige, gray, and white. Their beaks are black, and the young all look alike, regardless of their species. They gradually acquire their full adult plumage - predominantly white with localized gray and black - after two to four years, at the moment of sexual maturity.
