In 1661, Louis Le Vau and Charles Le Brun were commissioned to create the Gallery of Apollo in the Louvre. The best artists of the time took part in the work, but in 1679 Louis XIV had a completely different focus, Versailles. Although the stucco sculptures were finished, the same could not be said for the paintings. The work thus stopped due to a lack of artists. In 1848, the architect Félix Duban was commissioned to restore and complete the gallery. He asked three famous artists to create the missing paintings from Le Brun’s sketches: Eugene Delacroix, Charles-Louis Müller and Joseph-Benoît Guichard.
