Wooden toys made in Moirans-en-Montagne

In the heart of the Haut-Jura, the art of toy making dates back to the Middle Age. This Jura heritage is inseparable from woodturning. The object's manufacture dates back to pilgrimages to the Abbey of Saint-Claude in the 13th century. The demand for religious objects has increased and pushed the monks to make objects in wood, horn, or ivory. The Jura peasants resumed making rosaries and religious objects in winter when their plots of land were dormant. The savoir-faire has been passed down from generation to generation.
