Wood from 120-year-old trees

Conifers, like hardwoods, are divided into two parts: sapwood and heartwood. The sapwood conducts the sap under the bark while the heartwood, in the center of the trunk, no longer conducts it. The heartwood constitutes the noblest and hardest part of the wood, destined to be uncovered with axes and doloires at the Guédelon medieval construction site in the Yonne department. For its floors, six trunks 26 ft (8 m) long and 1,15 ft x 1,15 ft (35 x 35 cm) were extracted from 120-year-old trees cut in the Guédelon forest.
