This mama wearing a pareo with a vegetable crown and a tiara flower on her ear, recalls the models of Gauguin whose paintings enabled Europe to discover this traditional garment. Before the introduction of weaving, the pareo - then called tapa - was made from beaten tree bark. Its motifs were hand-printed with carved wooden blocks.
