Wine in Burgundy: a little bit of history

Present since the Gallo-Roman period, the vineyards of Burgundy greatly expanded in the Middle Ages. Little by little, the large abbeys, the bishoprics and the Dukes of Burgundy contributed, each in their own way, to the construction of a prestigious vineyard. In the 15th century, the geographic extent of the Duchy of Burgundy, from Mâcon to Amsterdam, makes the wines of Burgundy known throughout Northern Europe. In the 19th century, the vineyard becomes divided into terroirs. Burgundy’s AOCs, formalized by decree in the twentieth century, are still in use today.
