In the 17th century, Dutch explorers landed at Staten Landt. They decide to change the name of this island and baptize it: Nova Zeelandia. Zealand is the name of a province in the Netherlands (Northern Europe) and means land of the seas. Thus, Nova Zeelandia means new land of the seas. Photo credit: Casey Horner
