The second permanent exhibition of the Cité du Train-Patrimoine SNCF, in Mulhouse, is entitled “Les Quais de l’Histoire” (The Platforms of History). It traces the technological evolution of the French railways. The oldest locomotive in the museum is the 111 Buddicom n°33 from 1844, which operated the Paris-Rouen route. In the steam section, the 232 U1 steam locomotive from 1949 – which could reach speeds of up to 124 mph (200 km/h) – is switched on every 30 minutes. This permanent animation helps to understand how the connecting rods operate in order to rotate the drive wheels and set off the train.
