What is the origin of the name Australia?

Australia takes its name from the Latin word australis. Australis means that which has a connection or which belongs to the southern part of the terrestrial globe. Until the end of the 18th century, Australia was called Terra Australis Incognita, the land of the south that we do not know. It was the Western explorers who decided to call it Australia.
