Elasmobranchs species, including the whale shark, have a cartilaginous skeleton which weighs less than bone, so less energy is spent when moving. They have 4 to 7 pairs of gill slits, the whale shark has 5 pairs. Only four of them are active filter feeders: the whale shark, the megamouth shark, the basking shark, and the manta ray.
