Located on the western part of the island of New Guinea, West Papua is part of Indonesia, unlike the eastern part of the island which is a sovereign state called Papua New Guinea. It represents 22% of the Indonesian territory but only 1.5% of its total population. It covers a mountainous and difficult-to-access region of 262,206sqmi (421,981km2) with low and swampy coasts covered with equatorial forests.
