West coast of Grande-Terre

The west coast of Grande-Terre, or leeward coast, is much less watered than the east coast, the average precipitations in Nouméa being 3.4ft (1.06m) of water against 3.2ft (1.70m) in Houaïlou. The niaoulis savannah occupies a large area from the littoral to the Central Chain where the cooler and wetter climate generates a denser vegetation.
