West coast mangrove swamp

The western coastal area of the New Caledonian lagoon surrounding Grande-Terre has particularly well-developed mangroves at its northern and southern ends. These areas are bordered by frontal mangrove swamps which stretch for several kilometers, such as the Mèwa Pohiru swamp, which extends over 4.3mi (7km) south of Nessadiou. The bottoms of the bays and the deltas are also occupied by mangrove swamps.
