West Bay’s remarkable skyscrapers

Located in the northern part of Doha Bay, at the end of the Corniche, West Bay is the skyline of Qatar’s capital. It is home to a series of remarkable buildings designed to become landmarks along the coast. In the centre of the photo, the Tornado Tower with its steel mesh facade partially hides the Doha Tower (or Burj Tower) located just behind it. Designed by French architect Jean Nouvel, the Burj Tower is shaped like a traditional Qatari dovecote. It is topped by a dome and a light tower that reaches 759.5 feet (231.5 metres). Its facade evokes the complexity of an oriental mashrabiya while serving as a sunshade. On the right, the Al Bidda Tower – inspired by Dubai’s Cayan Tower – has no flat surface and appears to rotate on each of its levels, which are wider at the top than at the base.
