Welwitschia mirabilis es la única especie del género Welwitschia, que a su vez es el único género de la familia Welwitschiaceae, perteneciente a las gimnospermas. Es endémica del desierto del Namib, entre Angola y Namibia.
La especie es dioica y es difícil determinar la edad de las plantas, aunque se cree que pueden llegar a vivir más de 1000 años, incluso 2000.
Se cree que la planta absorbe el agua a través de estructuras peculiares en sus hojas que le sirven para aprovechar el rocío nocturno del desierto. Friedrich Welwitsch la descubrió en 1860, considerándose una de las plantas más raras que existen y bastante apreciada por coleccionistas. Está en peligro de extinción.
