The practice of water sports with motorized boats such as wakeboarding, wakesurfing, and water skiing is authorized on the Serre-Ponçon lake in the Hautes-Alpes department. Sliding schools have incidentally multiplied around the body of water. If water skiing is an old practice well known to all, wakeboarding and wakesurfing have developed more recently and are respectively similar to snowboarding and sea surfing. All these activities require specific boats equipped with tow bars and likely to generate waves to surf.
