Water and ocher

The Doa stream played an essential role in the ocher industry of the commune of Rustrel in the Vaucluse department. The water pumped from the bed of the Doa and retained in basins was indeed used to separate the ore from the sand. The ocher collected was first washed with a jet and then transported loaded with water by gravity through channels and ditches in which the sand was gradually deposited. The ocher-laden water then joined a settling basin where the water / ocher separation took place little by little by sedimentation.
