The muzzle of the walrus (Odobenus) is adorned with a spectacular mustache which covers its upper lip. It is composed of 450 erectile vibrissae arranged in rows. Highly vascularized and endowed with a central nerve, these vibrissae are vital sensory organs which allow the walrus to feel the pack ice cracks due to hot currents but also determine its hostile or benevolent attitude.
