Walls to protect access to water

In addition to its enclosure walls, the city of Al Zabarah was defended by the small fort Qal’at Murair, built in 1768 on an elevated escarpment above the city. Recent excavations revealed several wells inside and outside the fort and a large underground cistern used to store water. At the end of the 18th century, two almost parallel walls with round towers at regular intervals linked the outer city wall to the Qal’at Murair fort. These walls appear to have provided protection for the inhabitants of the city’s water supply. The harbour was also protected to the north by an overhang of the enclosure wall which extended into the water for some 164 feet (50 metres) and was topped by a tower.
