In the Gulf of Fonseca, the mangrove swamps form a broad border with an outstanding biodiversity between sea and land. The red mangrove is the most widespread tree species. It occupies areas which are permanently flooded by tidal movements. The black mangrove grows on the winding banks of the five rivers flowing into the Gulf whereas the white mangrove and the button mangrove take place further inland.
