The volcanic projections like those of Puy de la Vache in the Auvergne Volcanoes Regional Nature Park form a crescent bordering the volcano's crater. The size of their particles varies with the force of the explosions and is inversely proportional to the distance of the projections from the center of activity. The successive projections build up over one another and form a layer whose sharpness is linked to each explosion.
