Voh blue hole, a Kanak taboo

In the Voh area, about 186mi (300km) from Noumea in the North Province, is a gaping blue hole at the border of the lagoon and the open sea which plunges more than 656ft (200m) deep. For the Melanesians, the site is taboo because it would allow the passage of the souls of the dead to the other world. Neither the boats nor the scientists dare defy the Kanak ban by trying to approach.
