The vine belongs to the botanical family Vitaceae or Ampelidaceae and the generic term ‘Vitis’ refers to all vine species. The cultivated vine is referred as ‘Vitis vinifera subsp. Vinifera’ or simply ‘Vitis vinifera’. With more than 6,000 grape varieties, ‘Vitis vinifera’ now accounts for almost all the vines cultivated throughout the world.
