The Tour du Fanal or Tour Ronde (Round Tower) of Fort Saint-Jean was built in the middle of the 17th century (1644). At that time, Marseille shipowners wanted to fortify the fort and the entrance to the Vieux-Port with a watchtower sufficiently high to be visible to merchant ships more than 12 miles (20 km) from the city's harbor. Almost 100 ft (30 m) high, the Tour du Fanal was built two centuries after the Tour du Roi René or Tour Carrée (Square Tower) of the same fort.
